Cold chain has the strongest economics in UK commercial solar. 24/7 refrigeration provides 90%+ self-consumption — the highest of any commercial sector. Grid electricity is the largest operating cost in cold storage, typically 25–40% of opex, and has risen 40–80% since 2022 with TNUoS and BSUoS network charge increases compounding wholesale price volatility. The combination produces typical paybacks of 4–5 years and IRRs in the 18–28% range — the fastest payback we deliver in any commercial sector.

Why solar PV fits cold storage solar

  • 24/7 refrigeration baseload provides 88–94% self-consumption — highest of any commercial sector
  • Grid electricity is the single largest cold chain operating cost (25–40% of opex)
  • F-gas Regulation 2014/517 driving refrigeration retrofits — solar pairs perfectly with new electric plant
  • BRCGS Storage and Distribution v9 audit-ready monitoring as standard
  • IETF grant funding available for eligible cold chain operators (30–50% intervention rate)
  • Major retailer customers (Tesco, Sainsbury's, M&S, Waitrose, Aldi, Lidl) award contract weighting

System design and sizing

The sizing methodology for cold chain is unusual: the binding constraint is almost never roof area or DNO capacity. It is the refrigeration baseload, which can absorb essentially all the generation produced in daylight hours regardless of weather. We routinely design cold chain installs at 100–130% of the metered daytime baseload, using F-gas-compliant heat recovery and battery storage to capture residual export and discharge during evening shift.

Cold storage roof penetrations require special care. The roof is typically a structural-deck-plus-insulated-panel (PIR or PUR) system maintaining the cold side air seal. Standard roof bolt or ballast-on-membrane systems must be designed to respect the panel integrity and avoid creating thermal bridges. We use proven ballasted systems on cold storage roofs and avoid mechanical fixings unless the roof has been re-engineered for solar mounting.

Compliance and regulation

F-gas Regulation 2014/517 alignment for refrigeration retrofits. LPC sprinkler clearances 1m to deflector, 0.6m high-bay. Cold-chain-specific insurer engagement (consequential loss exposure on product spoilage is high). BRCGS, SQF, IFS, FSSC 22000 audit-ready monitoring. ISO 50001 energy management alignment.

Common questions about cold storage solar

Why is cold storage solar payback so much faster than other sectors?

24/7 refrigeration provides ~90%+ self-consumption — the highest of any commercial sector. Combined with high grid retail tariffs (electricity is the largest cold chain operating cost), every kWh generated is offsetting expensive grid electricity rather than being exported at lower SEG rates. Cold chain operators routinely achieve IRRs of 18–28% on PV capex.

Can we install on a structural-insulated-panel cold store roof?

Yes — but with care. We use proven ballasted systems that respect the panel integrity and avoid creating thermal bridges. Mechanical fixings are only used when the roof has been re-engineered for solar mounting. Cold-chain insurer engagement is critical because consequential loss exposure (product spoilage if the building is taken offline by a roof leak) is much higher than for ambient warehousing.

How does solar pair with our F-gas refrigeration retrofit?

Excellently. F-gas Regulation 2014/517 is driving operators to replace high-GWP HFC refrigerants with low-GWP alternatives (CO2 transcritical, ammonia, R290 propane). Many of these retrofits drive heat pump conversions from gas-fired space heating. Solar pairs perfectly with both — new refrigeration plant tends to be more electrically intensive, and heat pumps eliminate gas use entirely. The strategic move is to schedule solar alongside the refrigeration retrofit.

Will we qualify for IETF grant funding?

Cold chain and certain food-warehouse operators with the relevant SIC codes can qualify for IETF (Industrial Energy Transformation Fund), administered by DESNZ. Eligibility depends on SIC code, energy intensity, and quantified emissions reduction. Where eligible, IETF provides 30–50% capital intervention rates. We support the application alongside our standard project delivery.

How does our BRCGS audit handle solar?

BRCGS Storage and Distribution v9 references renewable energy adoption in environmental management criteria. Solar PV with certified generation tracking is auditable evidence of Scope 2 reduction and increasingly contributes to the audit score directly. We deliver an audit pack as standard project deliverable.
