Self-consumption rates of 85-95% are typical in cold storage operations, meaning almost every kilowatt-hour generated displaces grid electricity at the full retail avoidance rate rather than being exported at lower tariffs.

Battery storage adds a further dimension for temperature-controlled facilities. A battery system sized at 4-8 hours of critical load capacity not only provides emergency backup power to protect stock during grid outages but also enables sophisticated peak-shaving strategies that reduce maximum demand charges. For cold stores processing high-value pharmaceutical or food products, the insurance value of battery backup alone often justifies the additional investment beyond solar panels.
